The False Choice Between the Shark and the Leviathan: Why the Church Rejects Both Market and State Idolatry

“The Neoliberal sees a Consumer. The Marxist sees a Class Unit. The Christian sees a Person. We reject the idolatry of the Market and the State alike. Justice is not finding the right system to "save" man, but building a society that respects the man God already saved.”

In the modern political arena, the debate is often framed as a cage match between two materialism. On one side stands Neoliberalism, the philosophy of the autonomous individual and the unconstrained market. It views the human person as a consumer, a maximizing agent of utility.

On the other side stands Marxism (and its various socialist derivatives), the philosophy of the collective and the state. It views the human person as a unit of class, a worker whose destiny is determined by economic structures.

The critic accuses the Christian of "backing" the Neoliberal side simply because we reject the Marxist alternative. They claim we are offering "feel-good slogans" while supporting an unjust system.

But the Christian view of the economy is not a "slogan." It is the only view that escapes the trap of these two materialisms.

The Failure of the Shark and the Bee

Neoliberalism treats man like a shark. It tells him: "You are alone. Swim, eat, and survive. If you are weak, that is your fault." This philosophy dissolves the community. It tears apart families for the sake of labor mobility. It turns Sunday into just another day of consumption. It is, as the critic rightly notes, a system that fails to "save" the dignity of the poor.

But Marxism treats man like a bee. It tells him: "You are nothing. The Hive is everything. Your work, your property, and your children belong to the Collective." This philosophy dissolves the person. It promises equality, but it delivers it by chopping down the tall poppies. It destroys the creative agency that allows a man to build a legacy for his children.

The Third Way: The Person

The Christian tradition offers a "Third Way." It is based on the Imago Dei and the principle of Subsidiarity.

We believe in private property not because we love greed, but because property is the shield of freedom. If a man owns his home and his tools, he cannot be easily bullied by the State or the Corporation. He has a zone of sovereignty.

But we also believe in the Universal Destination of Goods. Property has a social mortgage. The rich man does not have the right to use his wealth to exploit the poor or to hoard resources while his neighbor starves. Justice demands that the economy serve the family, not the other way around.

The Danger of Political Messianism

The critic scoffs that our ideology is "not saving men."

Here lies the deepest theological divide. The Marxist believes that politics can save men. He believes that if we just get the economic structure right, sin and suffering will vanish. This is Political Messianism. It is the belief that the State can take the place of God.

The Christian is a realist. We know that no economic system can "save" man in the ultimate sense. Sin is in the heart, not just the wallet. Therefore, we do not look to the State to be our Savior. We look to the State to be a modest guardian of order and justice.

We want an economy that allows a father to support his family with dignity. We want laws that protect the worker from abuse. But we do not want a government that promises heaven on earth, because we know that such promises always end in the construction of hell.
