The Great Inversion: When the Worshippers of the State Call the Free Man a Fascist

#Fascism#Nominalism#Idolatry of the State#Personalism#Benito Mussolini
Evidence

“Mussolini defined Fascism as "Nothing outside the State." The Christian defines Freedom as "The State is not God." If you defend the rights of the individual against the collective, you are not a fascist. You are the only thing standing in its way.”

We are living in an era of linguistic theft. The most powerful words in our political vocabulary are being emptied of their meaning and refilled with emotional explosives. The word "Fascist" is no longer used to describe a specific historical philosophy of state worship. It is used as a baton to beat anyone who refuses to bow to the new cultural orthodoxy.

This is a dangerous game. When we destroy the meaning of words, we destroy our ability to see reality. To understand who the real authoritarians are today, we must look away from the name-calling and look at the definitions.

The Idol of the State

Benito Mussolini was quite clear about what he believed. He did not hide his philosophy. He wrote that Fascism is "anti-individualistic." He declared that for the Fascist, "everything is within the State, and nothing human or spiritual exists, much less has value, outside the State."

This is the definition of Totalitarianism. It is the belief that the political container is the only container. It creates a closed universe where the Government is not just a manager of roads and armies, but the "conscience" of the people and the author of reality.

Now, let us look at the Christian tradition of the West. It posits the exact opposite. It insists that the Person comes before the State. The Family comes before the State. The Church comes before the State. These institutions have a life and a right to exist that the State did not grant and cannot take away. This is the only true firewall against fascism.

The Projection of the Collective

Why, then, do modern progressives accuse individualists and Christians of being fascists?

It is a psychological projection. The modern secular Left has largely adopted Mussolini’s anthropology without adopting his uniform. They believe that the "State" (or the collective Will) should be the "conscience" of the nation. They believe that the government should regulate speech, redefine the family, and manage the thoughts of the child. They believe that there should be "nothing outside" the new progressive values.

When a Christian stands up and says, "My conscience belongs to God, not the government," or "The family has a nature that the State cannot rewrite," the modern statist hears treason. They call this "fascism" because they cannot conceive of an authority higher than human power. To them, anyone who resists the Collective Will is an enemy of the people.

Freedom for Excellence vs. The Totalitarian Will

The true battle today is not between Left and Right. It is between the Person and the Collective.

The Christian view of the person is grounded in the Imago Dei. Because man is made in the image of God, he has a transcendent destiny. He is meant for something higher than the State. This makes him dangerous to the tyrant. A man who fears God need not fear the Caesar.

Mussolini hated "classical liberalism" because it "denied the State in the name of the individual." Today, we see a new hatred for any philosophy that denies the State in the name of the person, the family, or the faith.

The accusation of "fascism" is thrown at those who want less government control by those who want total government control. It is a logic-twisting trick. They claim that by protecting the rights of the individual conscience, we are somehow oppressing the community. But history teaches us the reverse.

Conclusion: The Reclamation of Names

We must not accept the label. We must return it to its sender.

The true anti-fascist is not the one burning down buildings in the name of a new order. The true anti-fascist is the father protecting his children from state indoctrination. The true anti-fascist is the priest insisting that the secrets of the confessional are higher than the laws of the parliament.

We combat this slur by pointing to the Cross. The Cross is the ultimate sign that the State is not God. It is the sign that there is a Truth that judges the Empire. As long as we hold to that Truth, we are free. And it is our freedom that terrifies those who wish to build a world where the State is all in all.
