The Orphaned Liberty: Why Secularism Cannot Justify Human Rights

“The secularist loves human rights but cannot explain them. Science sees atoms; the State sees taxpayers. Only faith sees the Person. If you destroy the root of the Imago Dei, the fruit of Liberty will wither in your hand.”

There is a haunting silence at the heart of modern secularism. We live in an age that is louder than any other about "rights," "liberty," and "dignity." We march for them. We write laws for them. We define our entire civilization by them.

And yet, if you ask the modern secularist why a human being has rights, or why liberty is objectively good, they cannot answer. They can only stammer.

This is the great paradox of our time. We are a civilization that wants the fruits of Christianity -- equality, compassion, the unique value of the person -- while frantically trying to kill the root. We are trying to build a cathedral of human rights on a foundation of pure materialism. And the cracks are beginning to show.

The Materialist Dead End

Let us look at the human person through the lens of the State and the lens of science.

If we remove God from the equation, what is a human being? Biology tells us we are a collection of cells driven by evolutionary impulses. Physics tells us we are a temporary arrangement of atoms. History tells us we are a tribal species prone to violence.

Nowhere in the microscope do you find "human rights." Nowhere in the fossil record do you find "equality."

If the materialist view is true, then "liberty" is not a moral truth. It is simply a preference. It is a pleasant fiction we tell ourselves to make life bearable. Under this worldview, the State does not protect rights because they are real. It grants rights because it is convenient.

But if rights are merely a grant from the State, they are not rights at all. They are privileges. And what the State gives, the State can take away. If the "consensus" changes tomorrow -- if the majority decides that the "gay daughter" or the "unborn child" or the "elderly burden" is no longer useful -- the secularist has no ground to stand on. He cannot say, "This is wrong." He can only say, "I don't like this."

The Christian Invention of the Person

The concept of the Person is not a discovery of science. It is a revelation of theology.

The reason we believe that the weak have rights against the strong is because of the Imago Dei. It is the belief that every human being bears the image of the Creator. This implies a dignity that is antecedent to the State. It means that the "gay daughter" mentioned by the critic has a value that the government did not give her and cannot subtract from her.

When the Church speaks of sin, it is acknowledging this high dignity. It treats the person as a moral agent capable of destiny. When the State merely says "you exist," it treats the person as a biological unit.

The Borrowed Capital

The modern critic who attacks the Church in the name of "freedom" is unknowingly acting like a rebellious child spending his father's inheritance. He loves the idea that every individual matters. He loves the idea that we should care for the marginalized.

But he forgets that the pagans did not believe this. The Romans did not believe this. The ancient world believed that some men were born to rule and others to be slaves.

The egalitarian liberty the critic cherishes is a specific historical flower that grew in Christian soil. By rejecting the soil, he ensures the death of the flower. He cannot explain why liberty is good. He can only assert it with a louder voice.

The Danger of the Void

When a society loses the ability to explain why it is free, it will not remain free for long. When we can no longer point to a transcendent source of our dignity, we will inevitably turn to power as the only source of order.

The State will become the god. It will define reality. It will define who counts as a person and who does not. And without the "control" of the Church -- the moral voice that stands outside the system and speaks truth to power -- there will be no one left to object when the State decides that "liberty" is no longer efficient.

To defend liberty, we must be able to explain it. And the State, for all its power, has no explanation for the human soul.
